Jonella Joy Johnson expects the summer of 1959 to be wonderful! After all, she’s graduating from high school, turning eighteen, and finally escaping from her fanatically religious Aunt Eula. But nothing can prepare the beautiful black orphan for the eruption which is about to take place in her small town, Great River, Michigan, in her church, Fountain Street Holy Church, or in her own naive, sheltered life.
Her innocence is nicked when socialite Elizabeth, a white bigot in high heels, pretends to do good at the Negro church for the sake of her husband’s political career. Then Jonella accidentally spires her beloved minister, Rev. Hyran Haynes, entering a stripper’s den. But it isn’t until Senator Paul Vanderzaan, with his blond handsomeness and toting his 4-year-old daughter, enters the scene that Jonella’s life shatters completely.
Nothing is all black-and-white, as she’s always believed… And only her own determination can piece her life back together again…
